VORTEX – Varieties of Radicalization, Terrorism and Extremism
Conference at the University of Gothenburg 5-6 February 2020 

Radicalization, terrorism and extremism are currently three of the most debated concepts in political language in the international system. What is counted as radical and extreme and when political violence is regarded as ‘terrorism’ are relative terms, based upon legal definitions as much as linguistic framings and ideological positions. The potential abuse of these terms with multiple meanings and a high level of ambiguity calls for precision. However, the contemporary discourse is still trapped in a dichotomy between a view firmly rooted in securitization, socio-economic explanations and media constructions. Is it possible to find a way out of this impasse? 

The conference “VORTEX – Varieties of Radicalization, Terrorism and Extremism” at the University of Gothenburg 5-6 February 2020 seeks to explore these issues from new and innovative perspectives. Informed by a recent development of critical radicalization studies, VORTEX brings together scholars from semiotics, peace- and conflict studies, intellectual history, social work and social psychology in order to dissect radicalization as expressed in international relations, conspiracy theories and populist illiberalism. 

Day 1 of the program is devoted to public lectures. During day 2, strategies for further research and publications will be discussed.
